The Relationship Between the Pelvis and Piriformis in Movement

Explore the relationship of the piriformis and pelvis.

With the leg fixed as in the gait cycle the piriformis is a hip abductor (contra-lateral lateral flexion) and rotator of the pelvis via the sacrum.

This relationship can be explored in open chain by adding a bolster to create side bending as a postural set up for the classic clamshell exercise.

Also check out the SL RDL exercise variation- “T Hip Mobility” video to see how I use this relationship as an important cue.

This relationship can be explored in open chain by adding a bolster to create side bending as a postural set up for the classic clamshell exercise. I will share some standing exercises where this relationship is highlighted in future posts. These tips are essential for taking this common exercise and actually making it worthwhile to improve hip mobility and stability
